The History Of The Prince Alfred

The Prince Alfred Hotel has a rich history and has been serving Ipswich for nearly 200 years. We started out as a modest timber hotel in 1842, surrounded by cotton fields, gardens, stables, a stockyard and a milking bail. In fact, the hotel’s original cold room still stands today after 179 years. In 1961, a fire ran through the hotel and burned the Prince Alfred down. Once it was rebuilt, it was reopened two years later in 1963. The Johnson family bought the hotel in 1987 and have been proudly serving the Ipswich community ever since. The Prince Alfred has grown from a humble two-storey hotel into a premier drinking, dining and gaming destination over its 179 years of operation. We now boast the biggest bar in the Southern Hemisphere, a top quality gaming room, a restaurant with an extensive menu, a café-style eatery, a liquor store, a chic cocktail bar and of course, function room hire. Ipswich residents along with the rest of Australia have been raving about the Prince Alfred for decades.
